PURPOSE To describe the angiographic changes accompanying the surgical treatment of moyamoya disease by pial synangiosis and to compare these changes with patient outcome. METHODS The preoperative and postoperative cerebral angiograms, MR images, and clinical records of 13 children treated with pial synangiosis for moyamoya disease were reviewed. RESULTS After synangiosis, 10 patients had s...

Indirect bypass procedures for moyamoya disease in pediatric patients.

AIM Many direct and indirect surgical intervention methods have been defined for the treatment of moyamoya disease. Indirect surgical procedures have been increasingly used. In this study, indirect surgical intervention methods especially used in combination with pial synangiosis were assessed together with other indirect methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS 11 patients who were treated with an indi...

Long-term outcome in children with moyamoya syndrome after cranial revascularization by pial synangiosis.

OBJECT Moyamoya syndrome, a narrowing of the basal intracranial vessels accompanied by the development of a cloud of collateral "moyamoya" vasculature, causes cerebral ischemia and stroke. This study was undertaken to determine if a standardized neurosurgical revascularization procedure, pial synangiosis, conferred long-term benefit in pediatric patients. METHODS The authors reviewed the clin...
